Pea Chilli Seeds
Pea Chilli Seeds. The Pea (Capsicum Baccatum var Baccatum) is a wild Baccatum cultivar that originates from South America. Sadly there appears to be little information with regards to the exact origins of this cultivar, so we will stick to what we know.
This is an easy germinator when it comes to wild chillies, certainly when it comes to wild cultivars. The pea is also one of those happy go lucky plants that just seems to get on with things without much fuss. Plants will grow to an average height of 1 – 1,2m. Plants may well grow larger if grown in the soil or larger containers. So a medium to potentially large cultivar. Plant structure is bushy. Flowers are typically Baccatum with beautiful white flowers with yellow/green blotches on the corolla. Flowers are very much smaller though than the domesticated Baccatums. Flowers give way to small pea sized pods that vary in shape from oval to round. Colour of pods change from green to orange when fully ripe. This cultivar does produce an abundant crop of little upward (facing heaven) pods. Pods are very much like Tepin pods.
The calyx on the pods is not pronounced like many of the wilds but more like an Annuum calyx. Once pods turn orange, they do have an interesting attribute of easily separating from the calyx. In keeping with most wild chillies, the Pea is thin fleshed and very seedy. The interior of the of the pods, while seedy, is quite juicy given its size. The skin of the pods is quite hard/tough.
The flavour of these pods is fruity with a touch of mineral. Actually surprisingly tasty. A medium category heat on these gems. A lovely peppery burn that is well rounded and lingers nicely. Heat wise, it is difficult to guess given the pods tiny size, but possibly in the region of 30,000 – 50,000 SHU.
These pods definitely suit themselves to drying and turning into a powder or flakes.
A really lovely Baccatum to grow and one with much interest. If you love Baccatums and are looking to get into wild species, this is a definite cultivar to look at. Its easy to grow, looks attractive and can be used in the kitchen.
